National Day of Prayer Service (2020)

Gathered in voice and heart, we pray for the creation, nations, and communities.

International Governments

God of the Nations, you created ALL people.

Blessed be the peace-makers who seek to reconcile and build relationships across lands and oceans among diverse people.

Guide our international relations to reflect your light of grace and love.

Unite us in the seeking of justice and the merciful and compassionate service of the vulnerable, despite race, ethnicity, and nationality.

In your name, Amen.

National Government

God of the People, you liberate us.

Blessed be the elected officials of the United States of America.

Blessed be federal organizations and their employees.

Liberate Americans from our sins of self-centeredness and greed, racism and sexism, nationalism and all prejudice that enslaves us and our neighbors.

Strengthen our lovingkindness in service, so that we might be a collective light for all.

In your name, Amen.

State Government

God of Governance, you direct us.

Blessed be the elected officials of our states.

Blessed be the state organizations and their employees.

Give those in state leadership a discerning spirit amidst this pandemic, balancing the risk of lives and strain on the economy, the voices of the cautious and those protesting, and the emotional and mental impact of isolation.

Embolden their civil service committed to your pathways of righteousness, which lead to life and abundance for all.

In your name, Amen.

Local Governments

God of Shepherding, you shepherd us.

Blessed be the elected officials of our countries, cities, and towns.

Blessed be county, city, and town organizations and their employees.

Shepherd local governance to ensure all have necessary food, shelter, and protections, especially the most vulnerable among us.

In your name, Amen.

God of Defense, you protect us.

Blessed be those who have and are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Reserves.

Blessed be veteran organizations and their employees and volunteers.

Establish your peace upon all the earth until war, near and far, is a distant memory.

Erase the trauma of war upon the body, mind, and soul of those who serve in combat.

May the sacrificial service of all veterans never be forgotten, for all gave some and some gave all.

In your name, Amen.

First Responders

God of Protection and Service, you respond to our need.

Blessed be those who serve their communities as first responders:
Law Enforcement Officers, Fire Fighters, and Emergency Medical Services.

Guide these civil servants as they respond to those in need among us.

Ease high-stress situations with your presence of peace in mind, body, and soul.

In your name, Amen.

God of Healing, you restore health in mind, body, and soul.

Blessed be all medical professionals including doctors, nurses, and lab technicians, especially those serving on the frontlines of the COVID 19 pandemic at great risk to self.

Blessed be scientist and lab technicians, especially those desperately seeking a vaccine.

Grant these rest in mind, body, and soul during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Be present with all who suffer in mind, body, or soul.

Sustain all of these with your light of hope.

In your name, Amen.

God of Knowledge, teach us about all things.

Blessed be our educational institutions and their employees, including: superintendents, principals, guidance counselors, office administrators, and bus drivers.

Blessed be those who educate us in educational institutions, including: teachers and their aides, professors and their teaching assistants, and tutors.

Blessed be those who educate us through their work, including: scientists, historians, experts, researchers and analysists.

Nurture and sustain these in their work, especially during this time of distance teaching.

Incite our learners of all ages to engage in the materials despite the distance learning.

In your name, Amen.

God of light, shine the light of truth and hope upon us.

Blessed be those who seek to provide us with information through news media.

Shine your light of truth upon their efforts, outshining any bias or deception.

Blessed be those who seek to entertain us with their written words, their music, or their video media.

Shine your light of hope upon and through their efforts, outshining any hopelessness.

In your name, Amen.

God of Creating, you created the universe and all within it.

Blessed be the universe, its galaxies and stars, its planets and their moons.

Blessed be the entire earth and its eco-systems.

Impart wisdom on humankind, transforming us into proper stewards of its resources, its land and waters, as well as creatures large and small.

Encourage our agricultural industries in sustaining practices, while providing food and supplies abundant for all of humankind.

In your name, Amen.

God of Providing, you provide for our need.

Blessed be the essential businesses and employees who are risking their lives, including utilities, grocery, restaurants, banks, and truck drivers.

Blessed be the non-essential businesses and employees existing in the unknown.

Prosper these businesses and sustain the economy upon its safe opening.

In your name, Amen.

Faith Communities

God of Grace, you are always and forever present.

Be a comforting presence for communities in grief.

Be a reassuring presence for communities in fear.

Be a loving presence for communities in hope.

Incite all communities of faith to seek justice, act with compassion and mercy, and love and serve ALL people, especially the vulnerable, in word and deed.

In your name, Amen.

God of Parenting, you are the ultimate parent.

Blessed be families forged in blood, love, or friendship.

Blessed be families who live together in quarantine, and yet still have love and joy.

Blessed be families who are separated by geographical miles, and yet always together.

Keep families, loved ones, and friends connected despite this time of social distancing.

Open our eyes to the bruises and our ears to the cries of the abused, especially those suffering domestic and gender-based violence and rape, until humankind has eradicated all violence.

In your name, Amen.

Closing Prayer

With bold confidence in the love, mercy and grace of God,
we entrust all for whom we pray into the hands and eternal care of God.

Until we meet again,
May God bless you and keep you in the palm of God’s hand.
